If my house could smell like Christmas year round I would be one happy camper. There is something about those warm and cozy scents that bring me back to being with my family at Christmas time. I truly love it when a scent can take me down memory lane and I get to revisit cherished moments with the special people in my life.
I made this stove top potpourri after searching Christmas pins on Pinterest (p.s you should follow me there : Airelle Snyder) and every recipe I found had cranberries or some other ingredient I did not have on hand, and going to the store seemed real hard! So like most of my DIY projects I just wing it and hope for the best. Lucky for me the family loved it and so did I! Mema walked in the house and immediately asked “what that yummy” scent was! Success! Ok, so don’t forget I semi followed a bunch of Pinterest recipes and just threw together ingredients i fancied, so feel free to take this recipe and add or take away from it, whatever floats your boat and gets you in the Christmas/Wannafeelcozy mood!
So here we go! Ill show you what I did!
First I cut one apple and two oranges semi thin then put them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Set your oven to 400 degrees and let it preheat. When the oven is ready pop those babies in and let them dry down and roast a bit ( give or take 30 minutes). I did not leave my fruit in long enough so y’all be sure they are nice and crispy before you take them out.
After you have taken your crisp fruit out (which will make your kitchen smell wonderful) get your sauce pan and crank that heat up to medium. Now we are going to add our spices!
I think most of the recipes I saw had a foundation of these spices pictured above, minus the vanilla, that was my special touch. So, in reality I didn’t measure a thing but I will do my best to tell you what the measurements looked like. First I put in around three tablespoons of cinnamon, then a splash of cloves (ten or so). Next you want to throw in a dash of nutmeg (or two). I then took a few cap fulls of vanilla and put them in my concoction. The only thing that is not pictured here are my two cinnamon sticks that I threw in last minute because I thought they would make my blog pictures a little more appealing, but it is completely unnecessary to add both cinnamon sticks and ground powder (pick one).
Here’s a not so fancy up close photo I took! Hey, its not about the appearance here! As long as she smells good then we did it right!
Then I added in my dried fruit to the spices in my sauce pan and filled the pan with water about half way. I let it come to a boil and then reduced it to simmer. The potpourri simmered all day and I had to add a little more water towards dinner time. It truly made the entire house smell delicious! People would come in and out of the front door and wonder what I was baking!
