With winter in full force I have been experiencing the awful side effects it bestows upon us. For your sanity I will only be discussing one of those side effects today, dry skin. Dry skin is uncomfortable, painful, and not cute. No one wants flakes of skin flying off of their body all day! I have rounded up five ways we can help soothe our skin this winter and help rid ourselves of that pesky dry skin! Let’s start with the most obvious…
1. Water. Increasing your water intake will help not only hydrate your insides but also your outer layers of skin too. I cannot stress enough how important drinking water is for your skin. It helps fight off aging and keeps our outer layer nice and plump and free of those darn wrinkles! So increasing your water intake will not only keep you young but will relieve your dry skin! So go fill up that cute tumbler your friend got you for Christmas with some h2o and your skin will thank me later!
2. Humidifier. The air in the winter is so incredibly dry. There is hardly any moisture for our skin to soak up when it is terribly cold outside. Buying an inexpensive humidifier and putting it beside your bed while you sleep will keep your air nice and moist and keep your skin hydrated! Not only will your skin thank me but also your sinuses too! (Make sure to clean your humidifier well so there is no mold build up!)
3. Cold showers. High heat temperatures are terrible for your skin. As cold as your bathroom may be and as tempting as it is to stand under that boiling water to warm yourself up, don’t do it! Try keeping the water as cool as you can stand so the heat will not suck, what little moisture your dry skin has, out and make matters worse. Heat is a big no no when it comes to dry skin! Cool those showers down and you’ll save water too by showering faster to get the heck out of there!
4. Turn off the heat. This is the same principle as before! Keep the heat in your car and home at a reasonable temperature! Do not kick your heat up to 80 degrees and expect it to not dry your skin out! You are literally sucking the life out of your body by keeping it so warm in your house and car! The quickest way to flake off three layers of skin is to turn your house into a furnace. Keep it at a reasonable temperature and if you need to, wear a pair of warm socks! Not to mention you will save on your electric bill. You’re welcome.
5. Ditch the acne medicine. Almost all acne medications are filled with a bunch of junk that is drying your skin out! If you have a pimple try using tooth paste as a spot treatment to keep it tamed. Also try to not use your Retin A as much, we all know how drying it can be! Save it for the spring and summer! Salicylic acid is the worst thing you could put on your already dry skin! Try using either the toothpaste method or a tea tree oil.
While these may seem like simple things to do and no brainers, they are necessities to keep our dry skin at bay. I hope that you are enjoying winter but please take care of your skin! A cold winter can age us just like a hot summer sun so keep these things in mind when you are going about your daily business! I hope y’all learned a little something and tune in next week for another Wellness Wednesday! Have a great rest of your week! xoxo
